My Story

I believe that effective design of photography starts with respect of the image and respect of the visual narrative. When design overpowers documentary images, the narrative is compromised.

After starting a career in photography at a small yet very special newspaper in Columbia, Missouri, I started editing my colleagues’ work and designing photo pages. One thing led to another. I’ve worked on newspapers and magazines as a photographer, designer and art director; freelanced in Philly and Annapolis working on books, corporate magazines, annual reports and private-school viewbooks; and was Creative Director for National Geographic magazine for 10 years. Now I enjoy making pictures again.

I want to help photographers with a body of work create a book dummy that follows their vision. There’s nothing like holding a book dummy in your hand—and evolving the first version to something better. And better.
